Apply for a water connection

If you're building a house extension, new home(s), or a commercial building, you may need a water connection for your new kitchen(s), bathroom(s), or toilet(s). Or, you might be looking to upgrade or split your existing water connection. For this, you'll need to apply for a new water connection.

You'll need to apply for a new water connection if:

  • Building or improving a property

    You're building a residential or commercial property in a new location and need to connect to our network or you're renovating, changing the use of the property, or building an extension

  • Landlords
    You're converting a building into flats
  • Agricultural
    You're installing an agricultural trough
  • Temporary supply
    You need a temporary water supply
  • Upgrading or relocating a supply

    You need to upgrade, replace or move your existing supply to increase the flow due to increased demand

  • Shared supply
    You're looking to split into or from a shared supply within commercial property
  • Fire
    You need fire supplies

You won't need to apply if:

  • Shared supply
    You're splitting into or from a shared supply within residential property
  • Private supply
    You're replacing your private supply pipe due to pressure issues, or it is leaking
  • Lead pipes
    You're replacing your lead supply pipe
  • Meter request

    You do not have a meter and would like to request a meter. In these cases, you can request this from our operational team on 0330 303 0368. If you need a disconnection along with your water connection, you can request this as part of your water connection application. If you need a disconnection on its own, please call our billing team on 0330 303 0277.

Getting you connected

Here's a step-by-step guide to getting a new water connection. We'll stay in touch along the way to make sure everything goes smoothly.

When making your application, please make sure you have the following:

  • A site plan clearly showing your requested point of connection
  • An application fee of £85.96 (incl. 20% VAT) for your first connection and £52.48 (incl. 20% VAT) for additional subsequent connections
  • Soil sample for any contaminated land
  • Location plan (to give us a reference point to GIS).

Apply online

Fill in our online form and pay your application fee using our GetConnected portal. We’ll review your application within five days.

We'll provide your quote

We'll carry out a site survey and produce the construction costs for your project within 28 days.

Accept your quote

Next, you can review the water connection quote, accept and pay for the construction works. Along with this, we'll ask you to fill in our water regulations questionnaire.

We'll complete the water regulations review

We'll review your water fittings information within 10 days and grant your water regulations consent. For high-risk projects, we may need to carry out an inspection.

Lay your private supply pipe

After receiving your water regulations consent, you'll need to arrange for a qualified plumber or contractor to lay the private supply pipe from your property.

Submit pipework photos

Once your private supply pipe is laid, you will need to submit photos for a site inspection. We'll review these to make sure your pipework is ready to be connected to the water main. Our photo guide details what we'll need.

We'll complete your water connection and install your meter

Once we’ve completed our inspection, we'll complete the water connection and install a meter within the next 21 days.

Register your new billing account

Your new water supply is now live. You'll need to register your new billing account so that we can send your monthly bills.
