Preventing flooding in Thanet

Sewers around Thanet are getting an £16.5 million investment to replace ageing infrastructure and reduce the risk of flooding.

background

What are we doing?

We’re working hard to replace ageing sewers to prevent flooding in your homes and protect the environment

Some of the sewers beneath your streets are more than 100 years old and we’ve been carrying out surveys and repairs to make sure they’re fit for the future. Some of this work may involve relining and sealing sewer pipes in Thanet.

We’ll be replacing 100 manhole covers, internally relining 225 sewers via manhole covers, excavating to repair 20 sewers and possibly taking on some sewer up-sizing work.

We’re using mining experts to access these ageing chalk tunnels because they’re so deep underground. Accessing them through existing manholes, we’ll be using state-of-the-art CCTV surveys and the latest technology to reduce noise and disruption while we carry out the work.

Where?

Birchington on Sea, Westgate, Garlinge and Margate.

Investment amount

 £16.5 million

Start date

January 2023

Completion date

March 2025

Useful information for residents and visitors

On site works should be completed by the end of Jan 2025 with only a few remaining sewers left to patch / reline. We’ll be mostly working during the day to minimise inconvenience to road users and the local community. We may also have to carry out some work at night depending on Kent Highways restrictions. When necessary, we’ll be using traffic management to make sure we keep everyone safe.
