About Bewl Water

Bewl Water Reservoir

Situated near Lamberhurst, Bewl Water Reservoir is the largest stretch of open water in South East England. The reservoir is a key source of drinking water for East Sussex and Kent.

The reservoir has a capacity of more than 31,000 million litres of water – enough to provide an average day’s water usage (about 150 litres) to nearly 200 million people.

Our investment

We’re spending over £25 million on a water reservoir upgrade project at Bewl. This will keep the reservoir safe and protect against the effects of climate change.

The Drawdown Project will allow us to reduce the reservoir water level more quickly. There are many reasons why we might need to do this. For example, to reduce high reservoir levels during exceptionally high rainfall or carry out repair works to the dam.

While works are ongoing, some footpaths may be limited, including the path along the crest of the dam and part of the 'lower level' Sussex Border Path. We'll try to keep this to a minimum and any diversion will be clearly signposted in advance.

We expect to have the upgrades fully completed by the end of 2024.
