Launch of multi-million pound Hastings plan

We have revealed landmark plans to upgrade Hastings’ water and wastewater networks.

Engaging with the local community

The multi-million pound proposals have been developed following extensive engagement with the local community and key stakeholders

Hastings has faced significant challenges posed by water supply and flooding issues in recent years, alongside calls from the community for greater efforts to be made by all partners to protect and enhance the local environment.

Our plan includes actions to:

  • Work with partners to reduce flood risk in the town centre.
  • Improve the resilience of our water supply network, to keep taps flowing.
  • Change how we manage wastewater in the town, including cutting storm overflows.

Tim McMahon, our Managing Director for Water, said:

“We have been working closely with the local community, Hastings Borough Council and other partners, in putting together this important action plan – and I am confident that it will live up to our customers’ expectations.

“We recognise that our performance in the Hastings area must improve, and we are committing to investing and upgrading across the board to get there.”

The plan will be formally presented to Hastings Borough Council on Monday 11 November 2024.

Highlights of our Hastings Plan

Water

  • Improvements to our water supply works at Beauport and Brede
  • Refurbishment of reservoir pumps and valves at our Darwell site, and upgrades to the main water supply pipe connecting to Brede.
  • Construction of a new reservoir at Newgate.
  • Installation of 25km of new water mains, and associated pressure management technology, in the Hastings area.

Wastewater

  • Increased activity by our Clean Rivers and Seas Task Force to reduce storm overflows, through nature-based and engineering solutions, such as installing water butts, new storm tanks, and enhancing existing infrastructure.
  • Refurbishment of 500m of sewers in the area.
  • Upgrades of Rock-A-Nore and Galley Hill pumping stations.
  • Rollout of new solutions to manage surface water challenges at Alexandra Park, to lessen risk of flooding.

The full extent of this investment is dependent on Ofwat’s decision on our 2025-30 Business Plan later this year.

Alongside these infrastructure investments, we are also awarding a further £570,000 of community grants to Hastings charities and projects over the next 12 months as part of our Hastings community £1m goodwill fund.
