Water supply issues in Marchwood, Southampton

Due to a technical failure at Testwood Water Supply Works, customers in the Marchwood area of Southampton (SO14, SO40, SO42, SO45) were at risk of low pressure or no water.

UPDATE 10:00 Saturday 14 October 2023

We are pleased to report that reservoir levels are returning to normal in the Southampton area this morning, and we are no longer anticipating any disruption to supplies for customers in the Marchwood area or elsewhere.

Our teams have been working round the clock ever since pumps failed at Testwood Water Supply Works earlier this week, posing a risk that we could not keep up with demand. However, the pumps were fixed and a range of actions, including further repairs at Testwood, moving water around our network to where it was needed most, and utilising a fleet of water tankers, made sure no customers saw any change to their service.

Over the course of the weekend and into Monday we will be standing down a number of precautionary measures in place in Marchwood, including tankers and standby bottled water stations.

We apologise for any concern caused over the past few days as we have worked to keep our customers in supply, and we would like to thank our community partners for their support.

UPDATE 10:45 Friday 13 October 2023

Our teams worked through the night, and will continue to do so throughout today and into the weekend, to make sure our customers in the Marchwood area of Southampton do not lose their water supply.

This action is needed following a pumps failure at Testwood Water Supply Works earlier this week – so we can catch up with demand and replenish our reservoirs. The pumps have since been fixed.

The range of measures being implemented, which include further repairs at Testwood, moving water around our network to where it is needed most and utilising a fleet of water tankers, are working and nobody has lost supply.

However, our local reservoirs are still not at the level we would like them to be, so we are continuing to monitor the network closely and are taking precautionary steps so that we are ready should any issues arise.

Today, that precautionary activity includes ongoing tanker movements, preparing bottled water stations in the Marchwood area, should they be needed, and regular contact with key community partners.

Further updates will be shared on this page and across our social media channels.

UPDATE 18:00 Thursday 12 October 2023

We’re making steady progress on replenishing our reservoirs and we still have not received any reports from customers about changes to water pressure or loss of supply.

We are continuing to take proactive action, including delivering bottled water to our most vulnerable customers, preparing bottled water stations, should they be needed, and continuing to liaise with key community partners.

Further updates will be shared on this page and across our social media channels.

UPDATE 11:30 Thursday 12 October 2023

Following the technical failure of pumps at our Testwood Water Supply Works, our teams and partners continue to work hard to minimise water supply issues to customers’ homes and businesses.

At this moment in time, we have received no reports from customers of changes to water pressure or loss of supply. Despite this fact, and that the fault has been addressed, supplies may still be affected at some point today, as we replenish our reservoirs.

This risk currently applies to customers in the Marchwood area of Southampton (postcodes SO14, SO40, SO42, SO45). This is why we are taking proactive action as a precaution, including:

  • Delivering bottled water to our most vulnerable customers on our Priority Services Register
  • Preparing for the introduction of bottled water stations should they be needed
  • Preparing water tankers to support the network
  • Liaising with key community partners and infrastructure.

Further updates will be shared on this page and across our social media channels during the course of the day.
