Littlehampton Museum opened its doors to pupils, teachers, parents and carers this week, as it hosted an art exhibition for its local schools water safety project. The exhibition was declared open by the Mayor of Littlehampton, Councillor Sean Lee, with a formal ribbon cutting ceremony. The exhibition is scheduled to last until 13 September 2024.
The project, inspired by head teachers from schools across the Littlehampton locality, wanted to run a student education programme on water safety and celebrating water and living by the sea.
The RNLI and Southern Water worked together with the schools and attended morning school assemblies. Presenters were able to speak about how children can stay safe this summer on our region’s beaches.
Kim Twine, Education Officer at Southern Water said: “It was such a lovely project to be involved in. I was so impressed by the creativity of the artwork and the outstanding effort by the Littlehampton Museum, being able to bring all aspects of the exhibition together.”
Southern Water’s Community Partnership and Engagement team, also donated £5,000 to the schools for art materials.
Some of the feedback from teachers involved in the project and those who attended the exhibition included:
“What a wonderful exhibition, I was stunned by the quality of the artwork and came away with loads of ideas. It was a real pleasure to be involved in this event.”
“The children were so proud to see their work displayed in the exhibition, it was wonderful to see.”
Jane Colthup, project lead said: “All schools produced such high-quality artwork from their children, which gives a wonderful wow factor when you first go into the Museum. It is fabulous to see such a diverse array of creative artwork everywhere you look. Thank you so much to Kim and Phil for all the assemblies and support for the project and to Julia and Lucy at the Littlehampton Museum for curating such a brilliant exhibition.”
